I ran the Race for the Cure 5k in Idaho Falls today. This was the first 5k I have done in a couple years (I think). Going in I had high hopes of hitting around 18:00, but my training hasn't been going for too terribly long, so why should I expect a PR? I shouldn't but I had hopes.

The race started and me and one other kid jumped out in front. Technically he jumped out in front and he was about 30 feet ahead by the first 1/2 mile. I could hear someone close behind me, but I didn't want to look and force myself to try and run faster than I am able. At about the half way point I knew I wasn't going to catch the first place guy, and I didn't know how close third was. My goal at this point was to try and maintain the distance between first and me, and not look back for third.

The course was nice. We ran on a paved trail along a river, crossed the river, then ran back on the other side, crossed on another bridge, then went under the bridge back to where we started from. At one point a few geese were walking slowly across the trail, I was trying to run tangents and wasn't about to let a goose push me off my line. I stayed on my line and it got out of the way literally about 1/2-1seconds before I would have kicked it.

My chip time said 18:26, which would be a PR, but my watch said 19:02. I am trusting my watch.

Fun race, good cause.
